About Riverside Lions Club.
So who are we? First, we are not alone. The Riverside Club is one of over 44,000 Lions Clubs in almost every country of the world, with a total membership of some 1.4 million. There are 1,400 Lions clubs in Australia with around 30,000 members. All Lions are affiliated members of Lions Clubs International. Each club agrees to the constitution and basic principles of voluntary service, we pay subs to the parent body and to our District administration, but apart from that, each club is self-governing.
The Riverside Club was founded in 1979 by Moreton Bay Lions Club. We currently have 20 members, men and women, working voluntarily to improve the lot of the needy in this community.
We meet twice a month, the first Tuesday of the month is a Club business meeting, then on the third Tuesday evening of the month we have a Club dinner meeting, which is opened to family and friends. The Riverside area has many families and organisations needing help. Although money is scarce, we always find that the people of the community are ready to help someone worse off than themselves. We owe a deal of gratitude to the people around our area, to local businesses and to the people who attend our events.
Riverside Lions Serving the Community
The motto of Lions Clubs International is "We Serve" and this means responding to appeals for help. We get appeals for help of various nature, some direct from people who can find no other avenue of assistance. Other appeals come from community groups, themselves helping the community directly, and often short of funds. All appeals are treated in confidence, which is one of the reasons why so much of our work goes un-noticed.
Lions, "The Best Keep Secret in Town."
All this is made possible by the support you give, we appreciate the trust that you have in Lions, for they work for those less fortunate them themselves.
Spending YOUR donations
So how do we decide how to spend the money raised by our various efforts? After we receive a request for help it is then discussed at our business meeting, if it is decided that we can be of assistance, it then becomes a Club project, and a project officer is appointed. This project officer will then select other Club members to serve on a committee, their job will be to plan, organize & supervise a fund raising event for that project.
The Riverside Lions Club have a number of ongoing help projects, some of these being, Kids with Cancer, Prostate Cancer Research & Treatment in conjunction with The Mater Medical Research Centre. Plus we have a close working association with the Down Syndrome Association.
Our members are from all walks of life, men and women, a mix of ages, representing YOU when we are asked to part with YOUR donations. That's OUR motto for YOU - "Lions People - caring about people"
